The St. Giles is the Lutheran church of the parish Melkendorf within the Evangelical Lutheran deanery Kulmbach .

history

Based on the discovery of two capitals , it is assumed that the first church was built on the site of today's St. Aegidius Church around 1100. Presumably this church was destroyed in a Hussite attack around 1430. Thus, the church is one of the oldest in Upper Franconia .
The next fortified church , built in the Gothic style , burned down on the night of July 15, 1553 during an attack by federal troops. Reconstruction began as early as 1556. However, the new church suffered great damage during the Thirty Years War . Residents fled into the vault of the church, but this hiding place was also stormed by enemies. In the early 1730s, an extensive renovation finally took place in which the church received its baroque ceiling . In the 1970s the church got its current appearance.
