history

The place Melkendorf was first mentioned in 1303 as "Melchendorf" and in 1317 with the current name "Melkendorf". It was on the long-distance trade route Bamberg  - Bohemia .

The Steinenhausen Castle of the Counts of Henneberg was fortified in 1316. In 1430 the place, like Kulmbach, was destroyed by the invasion of the Bohemian Hussites , but was then rebuilt. In the course of the Reformation , Melkendorf became Protestant in 1525. It was destroyed twice more in the Federal War on July 14, 1553 and in the Thirty Years' War on March 15, 1634 by the soldiers of the Duke of Weimar .

Melkendorf was connected to the railway network with the opening of the Bayreuth Altstadt – Kulmbach railway in 1908. Since September 3, 1993 (cessation of rail traffic on the last section of Kulmbach), however, no passenger trains have been running there. The place was incorporated into Kulmbach on July 1, 1976 as part of the regional reform in Bavaria .
