Albertus Magnus Church

The St. Albertus Magnus church building , a listed building since 2007, was a Roman Catholic church at Königsallee 171 in Bochum - Wiemelhausen .

History and architecture

The asymmetrical building made of mutually shifted cubes , which are staggered in height, was built from 1960 to 1964 as the center of a planned but only partially realized community center under the supervision of Gottfried Böhm . The reinforced concrete building is clad with brick . The original flat roofs were converted into slightly sloping hip roofs in 1987 . A windowless baptistery stands in front of the elongated vestibule. The supporting framework inside is disposed so that the church in three vessels is located. The frame elements are made of fine-grain exposed aggregate concrete . The walls of the interior are also clad with brick. Light enters through the two glass walls on the side, which are structured by plastic concrete elements. To the northeast stands the Albertus Magnus Altar, surrounded by a burning bush . To the southwest of it is a confessional , the so-called judge's chair. It is supplemented by a representation of Sinai with the ten commandments. The colored glazing in the chancel was installed in 1980.

The church was "taken out of use" in the course of structural reform in the diocese of Essen and profaned in 2014. At the moment it is used by the Total Theater .
