The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Andreas is a baroque church in Babenhausen in Upper Swabia in Bavaria .

location

The former main church of the County of Fugger -Babenhausen stands on a hill in the middle of the market. From the west, a staircase, the so-called spiral passage, leads to the church entrance. A modern cloister is embedded in the wall in the spiral passage. At the top landing there is a crucifixion group carved around 1520 in a Memmingen workshop.

Building description

From the outside, St. Andreas is a simple building with a choir in front. The choir building with its cross ribs dates from the Gothic period, the nave is a square baroque hall structure. The tower is to the west of the northern sign . In the south, the entrance can also be entered through a preceding sign. A covered corridor leads from the south side to the Fugger Castle.

The church is richly decorated with stucco , paintings and carvings . The nave has three aisles. Four high columns decorated with stucco marble support a stucco flat ceiling and separate the main nave from the side aisles. A north and a south chapel are attached to the side aisles. On the east side of the aisles there is an altar.

The choir has a Gothic ribbed vault, which was made Baroque in 1717 with stucco by Michael Stiller. Several frescoes by Melchior Steidl can be seen in the vault, the two larger of which show Saints Andrew and Saint Joseph, the smaller the four evangelists , the four occidental church fathers and four emblems . Two side chapels are attached to the choir, in which the stairways to the choir galleries are located. A large crucifix hangs above the choir entrance. The high altar stands on the east side of the choir and is flanked by statues of Jesus and Saint Andrew in white and gold.

The galleries on the west side are on three levels, of which the uppermost is divided by the organ rising upwards. The uppermost gallery parapet is decorated with stucco and small pictures, the others only have stucco as decoration.
