St. Andrew's Major ( Saint Andras in Welsh ) is a village and parish (parish) in the municipality of Dinas Powys in the Vale of Glamorgan , between Barry and Cardiff in south-east Wales .

geography

The village lies between the first hills north of the coast, in the triangle between Dinas Powys, Gibbons Down and Twyn-yr-odyn . There are several golf courses in the area ( St Andrews Major Golf Club , Wenvoe Castle Golf Club , Dinas Powys Golf Club ). From Dinas Powys, Britwy Road runs west through Westra to St. Andrews Major. There is a church from the 14th century and a primary school in the village. In the early 19th century the house by the church was a coaching inn , but the resident Lord of the Manor closed the restaurant because, according to tradition, his farm workers spent too much time and money in the restaurant and their work neglected. The property is now privately owned and there is no longer an inn in town.

In 1801 the village still had a population of 420 inhabitants and in 1833 even 474; today it is only a small village with less than 150 inhabitants.

geology

The land of the Parish is good, brown, dry soil that is good for growing grain. The underlying rock is limestone . The ground rises to the north and to the coast to the south the area is flat and level. Occasionally this area is flooded by the Dinas Powis Brook , which runs through the southeastern part of the Parish and flows into the Bristol Channel between the parishes of Cadoxton and Sully .

The nearby St Andrews Quarry was used to extract road debris and to frame the windows of St Peter's Church in Dinas Powys.

St. Andrew's Church

The church is dedicated to Saint Andrew and receives its benefice from St. Andrews Major and Michaelston-le-Pit . At the east end of the north aisle, parallel to the pulpit, there is a private chapel, which used to be the property and burial place of the Rowel family , this family has long since died out. The successors in ownership were the Bouville family , who owned much of the Parish. In the floor of this chapel there is a tombstone with an inscription on a couple who both reached old age:

"Here lies the body of John Gibbon James, buried August 14th, 1601. And Margaret Mathew, his wife, buried January 8th, 1631. He was ninety-nine, she was one hundred and twenty-four."

Tradition has it that John Wesley preached in the Church.

The Rectory (rectory) behind the church was built in 1830 and the associated garden is used for village festivals. The old Old Rectory (Old Parsonage) from the 15th century also persists. She stands behind the newer building.
