The Church of St. Anna was a Roman Catholic church building in the Essen district of Altendorf . It was built in 1907, profaned in 2008 and closed in 2015.

history

The church, built in 1907 in a neo-Gothic style, was rebuilt in 1953 by the architect Engelbert Köjer after being destroyed in the Second World War .

The furnishings included lead-framed antique and opal glass windows by local artists Wilhelm de Graeff (1959) and Franz Pauli (1969). In the 1990s a wooden ceiling was put in place.

The St. Anna Church was most recently a branch church of St. Mary's Assumption. In April 2008 it should be attached to the parish of St. Antonius . However, due to the decreasing number of church members and also decreasing number of priests, St. Anne's Church was profaned in April and closed after the last mass. Efforts to use it as a successor failed. Although the building was in good condition, it was closed between June and August 2015 because there was no sustainable future use.

The neighboring St. Anna nursing home on the site of the former church was expanded from mid-2016. Mementos from the church were transferred to the Church of St. Maria Himmelfahrt.

Bells

In 1907 five bells were cast by the Otto bell foundry for the St. Anna Church, all of which were lost due to the war. They generated the beat notes h ' , c sharp' , dis' , e ' and g sharp' with respective weights of 3300, 2300, 1650, 1350 and 95 kilograms.

In 1956, the bell and art foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock cast three new bronze bells for the rebuilt church:

  • The large, 700 kilogram bell with the name Anna has a diameter of 1.06 meters and produces the striking sound f sharp .
It bears the inscription: + HOLY MOTHER ANNA, PATRONESS OF OUR CHURCH PRAYER FOR US. 1 9 5 6.
  • The middle bell, weighing 380 kilograms, named Kosmas und Damian, has a diameter of 0.87 meters and produces the striking sound a ' .
It bears the inscription: + HL. KOSMAS AND DAMIAN, GUARDIAN ANGELS, PROTECT OUR CITY. 1 9 5 6.
  • The small bell with the name Guardian Angel weighs 270 kilograms with a diameter of 0.78 meters and produces the striking sound h ' .
It bears the inscription: + HOLY GUARDIAN ANGELS, LET US BE COMMANDED TO YOU. 1 9 5 6.

The two large bells were brought to the Westphalian Bell Museum Gescher on May 19, 2015 by the bell and art foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock and are on permanent display there. The little bell with the name Guardian Angel remains in the garden of the St. Anna Nursing Home.
