Remnants of St. Anne

The pilgrimage chapel St. Annen was once located on a ridge south of Vacha in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

history

The Annenkirche was a round church from the early Middle Ages . In front of the stone building there was already a wooden chapel in the same place, possibly going back to St. Boniface . St. Annen was a much visited place of pilgrimage for centuries. From 1368 it was subordinate to the Servite monastery Vacha . A document of 1440 is the foundation of two annual requiem masses at Anne altar by Hans Wetzel from Pferdsbach village. With the Reformation and after the dissolution of the convent , the chapel fell into disrepair. The stones from the ruin were probably used to repair the city wall .

Extensive excavations were carried out between 1961 and 1963, which uncovered the foundation walls. In the process, a larger choir was also uncovered, in which the remains of a smaller choir were found directly at the sacristy .
