St. Anthony is a municipality ( town ) with 2258 inhabitants in the north of the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland , in the northern foothills of the Long Range Mountains .

The history of European settlement in the St. Anthony region dates back to the early 16th century when French and Basque fishermen used the sheltered bay as a port. When the explorer Jacques Cartier visited the settlement in 1534, it was named St. Anthony Haven . In 1857 St. Anthony had 71 inhabitants, in 1891 there were 139. It was not until 1900 with the arrival of Wilfred Grenfell , an English doctor and missionary, that the town began to grow faster.

The economic development of St. Anthony began in the 1930s with industrial fish processing . The US Army set up an outpost in the city and a radar station on a nearby hill in 1951. Today the tourism industry with whale and iceberg observation opportunities is the second important branch of the economy besides fish processing. The Viking settlement L'Anse aux Meadows can be visited from St. Anthony .
