history

In the course of the development of aviation, an airfield was built near Wiener Neustadt in 1909 and was then the center of Austrian aviation. After the First World War , community buildings were built , especially the Dr.-Karl-Renner-Hof . Initiatives to build a church have existed since the 1920s, which in the years 1933 to 1934 led to the purchase and conversion of the disused central heating boiler house of the air barracks into a church. The church was consecrated in 1934. In 1937 the former chimney was converted into a three-storey bell tower. It is remarkable that the bell tower does not end with a church knob with a cross attached, but with two flashing lights for the airfield behind it. In 1939 the church was elevated to a parish church. In World War II , major damage incurred.

In the years 1960 to 1964, the church was converted into a modern rectangular hall building under a gable roof and expanded according to plans by the architect Josef Patzelt . The side walls were structured with three large round arched windows each. Grete Frank created the new glass windows, Josef Adamcik a mural and three paintings.

On April 1st, 2019 the parish Wiener Neustadt-St. Anton canceled. The former parish church of St. Anton am Flugfeld has since been a branch church of the provost parish Wiener Neustadt and is the church of the sub-community St. Anton.
