History and architecture

Predecessor church

The previous church was built in 1954 according to plans by the architect Aloys Dietrich. After the end of the Second World War , numerous expellees settled in Willingen and made it necessary to build a new Catholic church. This was built with the help of the Bonifatiusverein .

The simple hall church with retracted choir was covered with a high pitched roof, which was crowned with a ridge turret. A segment-arched ceiling was drawn into the interior . The large round window in the gable wall was striking; like the fresco in the altar wall, it was designed by Ernst Suberg. Over the next few years Willingen developed into a holiday resort, the church became too small and also had structural defects, so that a new building was planned.

Today's church

The new building, an elongated room with a lateral expansion, was built from 1965 to 1966 according to plans by the architect Hugo Siepmann. The interior is trapezoidal, the offset of the right outer wall structured by a high window that illuminates the sanctuary. The left outer wall has no offset, it widens the space up to the rear wall, which runs in at right angles. The side gate is set into the left wall. The two side walls are divided by five high windows with concrete glazing by Ernst Suberg. Due to the ceiling, these windows are cut at an angle. The very steep roof surface of the tower is in balance with the slightly inclined roof surface of the church.

  • The back of the altar is framed by a wall, which is continued in the outer walls of the building. The slate altar block is three steps higher.
  • The chairs are aligned in two blocks to the altar, a third block stands on the left side of the room trapezoid.
  • The confessional , the baptismal font and the organ gallery are on the left.
  • The high cross on the wall, the Madonna in protective cloak and the tabernacle tower are also works by Ernst Suberg.

tower

The tower consists of two wall panels at an acute angle to each other. These discs are bevelled on the sides and taper off at the top. The interior of the church is accessed through the church tower, which serves as an outside access room. The rear wall of the church is in alignment with the outer tower wall, the pent roof above it reaches its highest point above the chancel. The roof surfaces on the back of the tower rise steeply. The high walls of the tower face south towards the Ettelsberg, they stand out from the dark roofs in the area.
