Robert Nares
Robert Nares (born June 9, 1753 in York , † March 23, 1829 ) was an English clergyman and philologist.
The son of the composer and organist James Nares attended Westminster School , where he was elected King's Scholar in 1767 . As a scholarship holder, he attended Christ Church College , Oxford, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in 1775 and a Master's degree in 1778.
From 1779 to 1783 he worked as a tutor in London Wynnstay, Wrexham; in the summer of 1782 he became a deacon at Easton Maudit, Northamptonshire. His first philological work The Elements of Orthoepy appeared in 1784, and in the following year he received the Vicariate in Great Doddington. From 1786 to 1788 he worked at the Westminster School as a tutor of the Wynns who were trained here. In 1785 he was appointed chaplain to the Duke of York , and the following year he was a preacher at Lincoln's Inn .
In 1793 he founded the British Critic , the first 42 editions of which he edited with William Beloe . From 1795 to 1805 he worked in the Department of Manuscript of the British Museum , first as a librarian, from 1799 as Keeper of Manuscript . The third volume of the catalog for the Harleian Collection was published under his direction .
In 1791 Nares became a member of the Natural History Society in London, in 1795 was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and the Royal Society of Literature , of which he became Vice President in 1823. After serving as Vicar in Dalbury (1796), Canon of Lichfield and Prebendary of St Paul's Cathedral (1798), he became Archdeacon of Stafford in 1801 and worked from 1805 as Vicar of St Mary's in Reading. In 1822 he published the Nares' Glossary as his main work , which was considered a key work for understanding Elizabethan literature.
