location

History and architecture

In the 19th century, Catholics, in particular from Poznan and Upper Silesia, moved into the previously Protestant Mansfeld region . In addition to the cities, some villages soon received Catholic sacred buildings. One such case is Helbra, which in 1885 received a wooden church designed as a small basilica. Before that, the congregation had grown rapidly to around 1,500 people, so that the pastor from Eisleben, who had been looking after them up until then, hired a vicar from Westphalia, who initially gathered the congregation in a dance hall. This Christian Schwermer founded various Catholic associations and also supplied the communities in the surrounding area, until there were separate communities (from around 1890 Burgörner (Hettstedt) and Klostermansfeld or 1902 in Hergisdorf).

Soon this church became too small, but above all it was insufficiently protected from heat and cold, and so on July 12, 1911, the new construction of the parish church began (since February 1, 1911), the design of which was already started in 1909 Leipzig architect Clemens Lohmer was able to win. On February 18, 1912, the new, significantly larger church was ready to move into. This neo-Romanesque basilica is a detailed, plastered brick building with a tower south of the east apse and extensions on the south and west sides.

Interior and outfit

In addition to the lead glass windows, there are altars, a baptismal font, an organ and a sculpture of the Virgin Mary in the church.
