St. Bonifatius is a Roman Catholic parish church in Kassel-Wesertor , which belongs to the diocese of Fulda . The church building is located on Ihringshäuser Strasse.

history

The parish of St. Bonifatius is one of the two large Catholic parishes in the north Hessian city of Kassel, in terms of area and membership, in which the Catholics live in the diaspora . It belongs to the pastoral association "Kassel Mitte", which also includes the parishes of St. Elisabeth , St. Familia , St. Joseph and St. Laurentius .

The church is under the patronage of St. Boniface , the "Apostle of the Germans", who in 717 received the commission from Pope Gregory II to preach the Gospel to all Germanic peoples . He first traveled through Friesland and Thuringia and from 721 began his mission in Hesse as well.

architecture

The church was built in 1956/1957 according to the plans of the Kassel architect Josef Bieling (1919–1981). The pillarless hall church consists of two oppositely nested trapezoids . The church tower is free. The colorful interior design of the church forms a strong contrast to the simple, white exterior of the building.

The crucifix was created in 1958 by the Würzburg sculptor Otto Sonnleitner (1906–1985), the mosaics are by Gerhard Dechant .
