Bieling Architects (formerly: Josef Bieling , Bieling & Bieling Architects , Bieling & Bieling GmbH , Bieling Architects GmbH ) is an architecture office with headquarters in Kassel and another office in Hamburg . The office has existed since 1955 and is now active throughout Germany. The sole owner has been the architect Thomas Bieling since 2011, who has been running the office in a freelance legal form since then .
In addition to some architecturally distinctive residential, commercial and social buildings, etc., the architectural office has been known since the mid-1990s, above all through competition successes and implementation planning in several large-scale urban development projects in the field of urban redevelopment and urban renewal of urban districts in various major German cities , such as reconstruction Untereustadt in Kassel, at the Waidmarkt residential and commercial district in Cologne and at the Neustadt / Wallhöfe district development in Hamburg.
history
In 1955, a native of Kassel architect founded Josef Bieling (1919-1981) in his home town, the architects Josef Bieling . The main focus of his work as an architect was the planning and execution of sacred buildings in the dioceses of Fulda , Paderborn and Hildesheim ; Among other things, he built 35 new churches and rebuilt and renovated numerous buildings in the dioceses . He was also commissioned to provide architectural services for old people's homes, kindergartens, rest homes, community centers, hospitals, schools, hotels and residential buildings. The outstanding new church buildings by Josef Bieling include St. Bonifatius and St. Theresia in Kassel.
Josef Bieling's sons, Kurt Bieling (* 1951) and Thomas Bieling (* 1956), also both studied architecture, each at the Technical University of Braunschweig . The older son, Kurt Bieling, completed his diploma in 1978 and worked from 1978 to 1980 in the Braunschweig architecture firm Pysall-Jensen-Stahrenberg ; In 1980 he joined his father's office and took it over after the early death of his father in 1981. The younger son, Thomas Bieling, graduated in 1983 with a diploma and then worked from 1983 to 1985 in what was then the Brunswick office of the architects Gerkan, Marg und Partner , in 1985 in the office of the architect and sculptor Gottfried Böhm in Cologne and from 1986 to 1988 as a freelancer at Gerkan, Marg and Partner.
In 1988 both brothers entered into a partnership; the office, which was still located in Kassel, was henceforth called Bieling & Bieling Architects and later Bieling & Bieling Architects BDA . Another office was added later in Hamburg. Thomas Bieling was a visiting professor from 1996–1997 and a lecturer at the University of Kassel (Universität-GH Kassel) from 1998–2001 , where he has been honorary professor in the department of architecture since 2001 and at the University of Kassel, which was renamed in 2003 .
From 2000 to 2011 the office operated in the legal form of a GmbH , initially until 2003 as Bieling & Bieling GmbH . The managing director was the architect Hagen Sparbrodt (* 1968), who previously - after studying architecture at the University of Kassel and graduating in 1996 - worked as an employee at Bieling & Bieling Architects BDA from 1996 to 2000 . From 2003 to the beginning of 2011 the office was then run as Bieling Architekten GmbH ; The managing directors were Thomas Bieling and Kurt Bieling, while the Kassel branch was managed by Sparbrodt during this period.
Since the beginning of 2011, Thomas Bieling has managed the office alone under the name Bieling Architects . The operative business is supervised by Hagen Sparbrodt as COO .

Company philosophy and office profile
The office, which has existed since 1955, names “conceptual drafting within a planning and design team” as a crucial part of its way of working. The declared aim of the office is “holistic planning with regard to efficiency, ecological responsibility and technical feasibility”; In doing so, it develops an architecture characterized by innovative technology , whereby the human being is at the center of architectural thinking.
The spectrum of work ranges from urban planning and architecture to product design . In addition to structural engineering, one focus of the office is now on urban development services for the revitalization and redesign of city quarters in several major German cities, each of which can be traced back to competition successes. In addition to the new residential and commercial buildings there, the office is largely responsible for the urban planning of the corresponding city quarters in Hamburg and Cologne.
