The business area has a geographical area of more than 13,000 square kilometers and extends over large parts of Hesse , southern Lower Saxony and parts of North Rhine-Westphalia , Thuringia and Rhineland-Palatinate . In addition to the operation of electricity, gas and water networks, the EAM Group's range of services includes the sale of green electricity and natural gas products. It also drives the expansion of renewable energies in the region, offers energy-related services and is active in the telecommunications sector. EAM employs around 1,200 people at 20 locations.

history

Under the name Elektrizitäts-Aktiengesellschaft Mitteldeutschland - that was the original name of EAM - the company was founded on September 6, 1929 through the merger of several municipal electricity supply companies and what was then Preussische Elektrizitäts AG (today E.ON SE). In 2002 the former E.ON Energie AG, which had previously held 46 percent of the share capital, took over further EAM shares from municipal shareholders and increased its stake to 73.34 percent. The remaining shares continued to be held by the city of Göttingen and twelve districts. In 2005, EAM was renamed E.ON Mitte AG . In December 2013, the municipal shareholders bought back all of E.ON's shares, so that the company has been 100% municipal since then. It has appeared again under the old company name EAM since March 28, 2014. The reason for the repurchase of the shares was the endeavor not to let the generated surpluses flow to the parent company E.ON, but to keep them in the region. EAM's managing directors are Georg von Meibom and Hans-Hinrich Schriever.

Structural data

From the beginning, the municipal shareholders of EAM were twelve districts and the city of Göttingen (sorted according to the level of participation):

  • Northeim district (including foundations)
  • City of Göttingen
  • District of Kassel
  • Schwalm-Eder district
  • District of Hersfeld-Rotenburg
  • District of Göttingen
  • Lahn-Dill district
  • Marburg-Biedenkopf district
  • Werra-Meißner district
  • Main-Kinzig district
  • Eichsfeld district

In December 2014 109 cities and municipalities took part in the EAM with a total of 35.3%. As of December 2014, EAM initially had a total of 122 owners. The final stage of the remunicipalisation process was completed in December 2015: Another nine cities and municipalities from Hesse and southern Lower Saxony as well as nine additional municipalities from the Altenkirchen district in Rhineland-Palatinate took over shares in the company at the end of 2015 through collection and control companies. EAM thus had a total of 126 shareholders. One shareholder left in September 2019. EAM now has 125 shareholders. These are twelve districts from Hesse, South Lower Saxony, East Westphalia and West Thuringia as well as the city of Göttingen, which together have 62.89% of the shares. The remaining 37.11% of the shares are held by 111 cities and municipalities as well as the special purpose association EAM Participation in the district of Altenkirchen, which 30 local municipalities from Rhineland-Palatinate have joined.

Network operation

EAM Netz GmbH (formerly EnergieNetz Mitte GmbH) has been responsible for the network business of EAM since June 2014. The electricity and natural gas network of the wholly owned subsidiary extends over a length of around 50,000 kilometers. The supply facilities in the power grid include 71 substations and more than 6,300 switching and local network stations, as well as 71 transfer stations and 283 regional gas control systems in the natural gas network. The company also offers a wide range of energy-related services, for example in the field of street lighting or the planning and management of supply networks as well as water supply and wastewater disposal. The network company has been operating as EAM Netz GmbH since April 6, 2020.

Electricity and gas sales

Through its subsidiary EAM Energie GmbH, EAM has been offering its customers green electricity, heating electricity and natural gas products since July 2014. EAM Energie GmbH is a joint company of EAM and Städtische Werke AG, Kassel, both of which hold 50% of the shares. All electricity products come from 100 percent renewable sources. This is regularly monitored by the Federal Network Agency together with the Federal Environment Agency. EAM Energie is represented with 16 service offices in its business area and advises customers on site.

Wind energy

In the "Wind Service" business area, EAM projects wind farms from the first idea to the finished implementation. The cooperation partners are mainly municipalities and regional energy cooperatives. Larger wind farms that are already in operation are the Lahn-Dill-Bergland Mitte wind farm (Marburg-Biedenkopf and Lahn-Dill district), and the “Die Gleiche” wind farm with six wind turbines in the Ottrau and Schrecksbach municipalities (Schwalm-Eder district ) and the Schwarzenberg wind farm in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district with nine wind turbines.

Utilization of biomass

EAM operates an ultra-modern biomass center in Kirchhain-Stausebach (Marburg-Biedenkopf district). Every year around 30,000 tons of organic and green waste and more than 5,000 tons of woody biomass are recycled there. Around 15,000 tons of maize, grass and whole-plant silage are fermented in a separate wet fermentation plant for renewable raw materials. The biogas generated in both plants is upgraded to natural gas quality on site and fed into the natural gas network.

Electromobility

EAM is consistently committed to expanding the infrastructure for electromobility by setting up e-charging stations in the region. The company operates a total of 51 charging stations. These include seven high-performance fast charging stations, for example at the Kaufpark in Göttingen, at the Kirchheimer Dreieck (A4 and A7 autobahns) and at the Lohfeldener Rüssel (A7 and A44).

telecommunications

Since April 1, 2016, EAM has held 50% of the shares in Netcom Kassel Gesellschaft für Telekommunikation. Another 50% belong to the Kassel Transport and Supply Company (KVV). Netcom Kassel offers private and business customers telecommunications services as well as landline and internet products. An important goal is to build the infrastructure for a comprehensive Internet supply with high bandwidth for the rural areas in Northern Hesse. The network required for this is currently being set up in five districts in North Hesse by Broadband Nordhessen GmbH. Netcom Kassel then installs the components for operating the broadband network and offers its telecommunications services.

Economic data

In the 2019 financial year, the companies of the EAM Group made a value contribution of 257 million euros within their business area, which will remain in the region. This essentially consists of wages and salaries, orders to companies in the supply area, concession payments for cities and municipalities, distribution of results to municipal shareholders and trade tax payments. The sales of the entire EAM Group in 2019 were 1,031 million euros. The annual surplus was 80 million euros.
