St. Clemens in Betzenweiler

In 1275 a church and parish "Zum Heiligen Clemens" was mentioned in the Liber decimationis of the Diocese of Constance in the Tenth of the Crusade . The east-facing church is slightly elevated, almost in the center of the village, on the road to Uttenweiler . It is completely surrounded by a wall from the 15th century. Inside this wall there is a cemetery, the funeral hall , a high cross and the memorial for the fallen sons of the place and victims of the two world wars . To the east of the church building outside the wall below the church in Pfarrgasse is the rectory , an eaves two-storey plastered half-timbered building with a gable roof from 1665. It was renovated in 1822.

The church has a tower to the north that was renewed in 1726. The nave is a flat-roofed rectangular hall with a three-sided choir closure. In 1578 the choir area was renewed and expanded. From 1878 to 1880 the nave was raised and the church extended to the west. In 1933 the church was renovated again, fundamentally changed in the years 1967/68 according to the structural ideas of the Second Vatican Council inside and renovated in 1984 outside. The churchyard wall was renovated in 1991–94.

Furnishing

The church has sparse figurative decorations. On the east side of the choir there is a crucifixion group with Mary and John. To the south of John there is a statue of Joseph, to the north a figure of Clemens of Rome with a tiara , pope staff and an anchor, in the nave on the east side a baptismal font , in the west a confessional . On the south wall there is a Saint Sebastian, opposite another figure. On the east side of the choir, a Madonna can be seen north of the arch, and to the south there is a picture of the dungeon savior. The organ stands on a gallery in the west, with a wooden figure underneath. A Way of the Cross made up of oil paintings from the second half of the 18th century is on the walls of the nave.
