The St. Elisabeth Chapel is a listed church building on the Lohof (different spelling also Lohhof ) in Reiste , a district of Eslohe in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The 6.2 by 4.8 meter building made of plastered rubble was built in 1840 and is in a good state of preservation. The simple rectangular hall is provided with a slate-covered half - hip roof, which is crowned by a ridge turret, which is decorated by a weathercock and houses a belfry .

After completion, it took another two years until the church was consecrated to St. Elisabeth of Thuringia on December 12th . The episcopal authority in Paderborn approved beekeeping in the chapel on the condition that beeswax produced here was used to make candles for church use. These wax products were actually used for lighting in the nearby St. Pankratius Church and in the Helper Chapel on Mescheder Straße in Reiste. The small church was therefore soon called the beehive chapel. The Kleinsorgen family, who no longer operate any beekeeping in the chapel , still keep a document about this agreement with the Catholic Church in their family history collection.

Pattern of the mosaic floor

“FOR A CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS INTENTION, THE MARRIAGES FRANZ KLEINSORGEN AND THERESIA SCHULTE BUILT THIS
HOUSE OF GOD IN 1840 AND IN 1842 THE 12TH DECE. GET INITIATED. LET US PRAY FOR THE LIVING AND THE DEAD. "

This is the inscription that is attached to the south wall just below the eaves . The wall underneath is an open framework so that beehives can be accommodated in the unfilled compartments . Behind it is an oak panel with two rows of doors and flaps. The interior, which is illuminated by two large segmental arched windows on the north side, is largely covered with a star-shaped mosaic of panels. In addition to several unpadded benches, which still make kneeling a little easier during prayer, the furnishings are determined by a brick altar . He carries a small wooden column retable , which, according to a name, could have been from 1690. The altarpiece shows a pietà , and St. Elisabeth is shown on an additional piece above it.
