The St.Galler Stadtwerke (sgsw) are a dependent company under public law that is run as an office of the Technical Operations Department of the City of St. Gallen . The sgsw employ over 280 people who generate sales of around CHF 210 million.

Areas of activity

The sgsw supply the city of St. Gallen with electricity , water , natural gas & biogas as well as heat and provide a connection to the St. Gallen fiber optic network . When it comes to supplying natural gas and biogas, they work regionally, from St. Gallen to Lake Constance . Comprehensive and individual services such as advice on topics such as energy efficiency or mobility complement the market offer.

electricity

The sgsw procure the electrical energy mainly through SN Energie AG (formerly Kraftwerke Sernf-Niederenbach ). SGsw also take over electricity from private small power plants on the Sitter , combined heat and power plants and photovoltaic systems and operate various photovoltaic systems in St. Gallen.

Customers are supplied via a distribution network of more than 864 km in length. Further tasks in addition to the operational management of the St. Gallen electricity supply: operational management for the Wittenbach electricity supply, expansion, conversion and renewal of the electrical line networks in the high, medium and low voltage range as well as the associated systems (substations, transformation and switching stations), public lighting, Acceptance and periodic checks of house installations, meter revisions and official calibrations.

water

The St. Gallen water comes from Lake Constance. In the Frasnacht lake water works , which is owned by the Regional Water Supply St. Gallen AG (RWSG), raw water is treated to make drinking water. The stock corporation, in which twelve municipalities in Eastern Switzerland are involved, supplies the SGSW, which distribute it in their supply area via a network of over 458 km in length. Other tasks in addition to the operational management of the St. Gallen water supply: operational management of the Frasnacht lake water works and transport lines, construction, renewal and renovation of the pipe network, pipe network control, water quality control, installation of systems and house installations, installation control, RWSG management.

Natural and biogas

The natural gas and biogas are procured by sgsw from Erdgas Ostschweiz AG . In addition to St. Gallen, sgsw also supply Abtwil and the towns of Arbon , Steinach , Horn and Rorschach on Lake Constance . The natural gas and biogas distribution network of sgsw is over 341 km long and is continuously being compressed. Other tasks in addition to the operational management of the natural and biogas supply: construction, renewal and rehabilitation of the entire pipe network, pipe network control, installation of systems and house installations, installation control, natural and biogas device service.

warmth

The St. Gallen waste-to-energy plant produces the majority of the heat that the district heating supply needs to heat part of the city. With the incineration of waste, around 16,000 residential and commercial units in the western part of the city are heated via a 56 km long pipeline network. Further tasks in addition to the management of the district heating supply: heat production and sale, new connection of customer systems, construction and maintenance of the pipeline network and heat production.

In 2017, over 85 percent of the population of Stadtsanktgall approved the credit line to expand the district heating network. On August 19, 2019, the ground-breaking ceremony took place for the construction of the new Lukasmühle district heating center in the east of the city, which is expected to be completed in 2022.

With an approval of over 80 percent, the people of St. Gallen launched the pioneering geothermal project in a referendum . Two deep boreholes were then carried out by the end of 2014 in order to connect a possible new heat supply. However, since May 2014 it has been certain: The city of St.Gallen's geothermal project cannot be implemented. The reason for this is the combination of insufficient depth of water, increased earthquake risk and surprising gas flow in the developed rock layers.

Fiber optic network

In order to meet the steadily increasing demand for higher bandwidths, the St. Gallen electorate commissioned the SGS with an approval rate of over 82 percent to create and operate a nationwide fiber optic network. As an open network, it enables the free choice of service provider and thus promotes competition. In February 2019, the regular expansion of the open fiber optic network was completed on schedule. By the end of the year, individual properties were connected that could not be taken into account during the regular expansion phase. This means that 48,000 households and companies have a connection and can choose from a wide range of services for Internet, TV and telephony on the fiber optic network. The major project was implemented together with Swisscom .

mobility

In terms of the City of St.Gallen's Energy Concept 2050, electric, natural gas / biogas and hybrid vehicles will be the main drivers in the future. The St.Gallen public utilities support the switch to environmentally friendly mobility by providing advice on energy-efficient and low-emission vehicles and being the contact person for electric charging stations in the city and region of St.Gallen.
