St. George Cathedral Church

The cathedral church of St. George ( Hungarian Szent György Dómtemplom ) is a sacred building in Sopron (German Ödenburg ) in the west of Hungary .

history

A Gothic chapel was built around 1380 . In 1398 the chapel of St. George and Margaret was in a bull by Pope Boniface IX. mentioned.

At the end of the 16th century it was a Protestant parish church. In 1674 the chapel came into the possession of the Jesuits in the course of the Counter-Reformation . The building burned down in 1676 and was expanded again in 1685–1694. The baroque side chapels were added and the interior design was changed to baroque style. In 1705/06 it was redesigned by Pietro Antonio Conti.

In 1780, after the dissolution of the Jesuit order, the church came to the cathedral chapter of St. George. It was restored in 1839. The building was badly damaged in 1944 and restored in 1948 and 1959.

The main nave has four baroque chapels on each side. The interior design consists of Gothic and Baroque elements.

The main altar from 1761 shows the martyrdom and the transfiguration of St. George. The organ built by Johann Wöckherl is in parts from 1633, the organ cabinet dates from 1756. From 2003 to 2008, the original arrangement from 1756 was restored through restorations . The bell is the oldest in Sopron.
