The Sankt Hedwig Church is a Catholic church in Jüterbog . The patron saint is Hedwig von Andechs , the patron saint of Silesia . The church is behind the house at Große Straße 86, the long side on Schulstraße. The house at Grosse Strasse 86 is the parish and community center. Between the rectory and the church is the Tetzel Chapel , named after the Dominican Johann Tetzel , who sold letters of indulgence in Jüterbog in 1517 .

Hedwig's Church

Jüterbog has been a Protestant town since the Reformation. In 1852 a Catholic mission congregation was founded, which was supplied from Luckenwalde . The masses were celebrated in private houses, from 1861 on the property at Große Straße 86 (at that time the house was number 24). From 1863 the Tetzel Chapel was the place of worship. After the artillery shooting school was moved from Berlin to Jüterbog, the number of Catholics grew rapidly. So the church was built in 1893 and was consecrated in the same year. In 1911 the community became a curate . In 1955 the structural connection between the church and the Tetzel chapel was established. In 1962 the parish was established . The church was given its current appearance during renovations between 1980 and 1982.

The church is a single-nave hall building , with the choir adjoining it to the south. To the west of the choir is the sacristy. The roof structure in the nave is partially open, the choir has a ribbed vault. The organ was built by the Ernst Röver company at the end of the 19th century . The organ front has neo-Gothic shapes.

The three choir windows show the saints Joseph , Hedwig and Barbara . The windows were created by Egbert Lammers in 1940 . The previous windows were designed by Hannes Schulz Tattenbach in 1933. They were rejected by the community as "inappropriate and tasteless".

Tetzelkapelle

The Tetzel Chapel is located between the rectory and the church; access is from the church. The chapel was built after a fire in 1478. It is a late Gothic brick building. The medieval cellar has been preserved under the chapel. In the chapel there is an Italian painting from the 17th century, Mary and Elisabeth with Jesus and John . The picture is on loan from the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation .
