St. Hedwig Chapel (2013)

St. Hedwig was the Catholic chapel in Völksen , a district of the town of Springe , in the Hanover region in Lower Saxony . At last it belonged to the parish of Christ König with its seat in Springe, in the Hanover deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The chapel named after St. Hedwig von Andechs was located at Kapellenstrasse 1/3 (corner of Alte Springer Heerstrasse). Today the closest Catholic churches are in the towns of Eldagsen and Springe, about six kilometers away .

history

After the number of Catholics in the area around Springe had increased significantly as a result of the influx of refugees and displaced persons as a result of the Second World War , the Catholic St. Hedwig's Chapel was set up in Völksen, in the storage room of a former sack factory. Their benediction took place on February 17, 1957 . It was located at Hannoversche Strasse 2 (later renamed Steinkrüger Strasse) and initially belonged to the Christ König parish in Springe. From August 1, 1961, the chapel was assigned to the parish of All Saints in Eldagsen.

In September 1980 the last church service took place in the chapel on Hannoversche Strasse, and a chapel was set up again in a storage room on a neighboring property as an interim solution until the chapel on Kapellenstrasse was built.

On 17 July 1982, the foundation stone was laid for the chapel at the Chapel Street, followed on 11 December in 1982 by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen her blessing .

As of November 1, 2006, the chapel belonged again to the Springer parish of Christ König , because the parish of All Saints in Eldagsen was abolished on October 31, 2006 and joined the Springer parish.

In 2009 the Bishop of Hildesheim decided to give up the chapel due to declining financial resources, but also the lower number of worshipers and priests. The request of the parish council and parish council to transfer ownership of the chapel to the parish and to keep it in future by the parish itself was rejected at the time. On March 6, 2014, the chapel was profaned by Bishop Norbert Trelle after the chapel had only been used for weekday services in recent years. The building is to be sold, but will continue to be preserved.

Architecture and equipment

The chapel was about 108 meters above sea level . There was a crucifix on the back wall of the chancel ; a stained glass window showed St. Hedwig, the chapel's patron saint . Next to the chapel there was a wooden tower with a bell acquired in 1996.
