history
The place Werther was first mentioned in documents as "Wartera" in 1050 in a copy of the register of the Freckenhorst Abbey . The register regulated the tax obligations towards the Freckenhorster monastery. A church was first mentioned in 1312. Archaeological excavations under the St. Jacobi Church could, however, prove a previous building from the 9th century.
Today's church consists of a single-nave Gothic four-bay nave from the 14th century, the two eastern bays of which served as the choir. A transept and a choir in neo-Gothic forms were added to this simple hall church in 1876/77. The basement of the west tower dates from a Romanesque construction period and was dated to the first third of the 13th century during the archaeological excavation in 1980. It received its upper floor and the vaulting of the lower floor as part of the expansion of the church in 1876/77 and today, 44 meters high, it shapes the silhouette of Werther. As part of the enlargement of the church space, northern and southern extensions, which represented a side chapel and the sacristy, were demolished.
