history

Floor plan in front of the addition of the aisle

As early as the 12th century, Mastholte has a chapel that was supplied by Wadersloh and that was consecrated to Antonius the Hermit . In 1537 the county of Rietberg became Protestant. In 1601 Count Johann III changed. again to the Catholic faith. When the chapel fell into disrepair around 1650, the counts decided to rebuild the church in the area of the farmers and later the community of Moese . Construction began in 1653, and the first service was celebrated in 1656. In 1658 the church was consecrated by the bishop of Osnabrück . Initially, only the ground floor of the adjacent tower was built. In 1663 thought was given to adding heights to the foundation walls. The tower was completed in 1691. Three Gothic windows from the old Mastholter chapel, which was demolished in 1673, could be built into the walls .

The church bells were cast in 1690.

In 1857 the flat wooden ceiling of the hall building was replaced by vaults.

The aisle was added in 1905

At the beginning of the 20th century the parish church was too small for the parish, and in 1905 a side aisle was added. A second aisle was planned, but was not built because of the First World War.

During this war in 1917 the bells of the St. Jakobus Congregation were drawn in and melted down. In 1920 new bells were purchased and consecrated in March 1921. Two of these bells were also withdrawn during World War II and made into ammunition. In 1949 new bells were ordered again. One of the bells from 1921 is still preserved. A chapel for the fallen was set up on the ground floor of the tower between 1946 and 1949.
