The church

The Protestant village church St. Jakobus the Elder is in Branchewinda , a district of the city of Arnstadt in the Ilm district in Thuringia . It belongs to the parish Marlishausen in Kirchenkreis Arnstadt-Ilmenau the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

history

The church, built around the 12th century in Romanesque style, has a semicircular apse and a Romanesque window on the north wall. The masonry has scratched joints and the outside is jointed in the Romanesque style.

A special feature is the small St. James window in the apse. On St. James' Day , July 25th, around 7 a.m., a ray of sunshine hits the altar plate .

The interior of the nave is furnished in baroque style. He has two galleries . Long benches fill the room.

The color scheme, like the organ on the west wall of the gallery, dates from the 19th century.

The Romanesque triumphal arch spans the chancel and is decorated with patterns. An 800 year old ceiling painting on the apse ceiling shows Christ as the judge of the world .

The Gothic winged altar above the apse arch originally stood in Gehren Castle .
