The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Jakobus and Barbara is a baroque hall church in the Bremen district of Geisa in the Wartburg district in Thuringia . It belongs to the parish of St. Philippus and Jakobus Geisa in the deanery Hünfeld-Geisa of the diocese of Fulda .

History and architecture

The first church in Bremen / Rhön was mentioned around 1341. The current church was built according to a design by Andrea Gallasini , who also designed the churches in Dermbach , Schleid and Zella . The building is a hall church with a three-sided closed choir in the west and a decorative facade that stands in a fenced churchyard. It was restored in the 1970s.

The church is a plastered building with structures made of sandstone and corner blocks at the choir. It is accentuated by a slate roof made of wood with a baroque dome . The two-storey facade is provided with a pilaster structure, the triangular gable with side volutes , which is blown down, is facing the roof tower. The rectangular portal bears the coat of arms of Prince Abbot Adolf von Dalberg from Fulda and the year 1732; Round arched windows are arranged above, the cornice is cranked. To the side there are figures of St. Sturmius , the founder of the Benedictine Abbey of Fulda , and St. Boniface from around 1900. The interior is closed off by a cove ceiling and has a ceiling painting by Hugo Pfister, which was painted at the beginning of the 20th century. The quadrature stucco was created in the years 1734–1740 by Johann Martin Hummel from Kitzingen.

Furnishing

The uniform furnishing with altars and pulpit in stucco marble dates from the time it was built. The high altar has a strong column architecture and the coat of arms of the prince abbot; it shows the Assumption of Mary in the altar extract , flanked by the expressive figures of Saints Adolphus and James the Elder . The side altars have a similar structure and the extracts feature depictions of the Holy Family and the third of Anna . The altar paintings show the crucifixion in the high altar and Maria Immaculate and Saint Barbara in the side altars .

The splendidly carved communion bench is decorated with artistically valuable reliefs of the Passion of Christ in openwork tendril ornaments by Johann Leister from the years 1735/1736. The organ in a baroque prospect was created by Johann-Markus Oestreich around 1790 . The baptismal font comes from the late Gothic period. There are also figures of Our Lady , Saints Joseph and Elisabeth from the end of the 19th century and Saint Barbara from around 1730. The Stations of the Cross, painted on canvas, were probably created towards the end of the 19th century and are inserted into baroque frames.
