The Regener Kirche St. Johann is a small baroque church from the 15th century.

history

The branch church of the parish of St. Michael, surrounded by a curtain wall, was built about one kilometer west of the center of Regen on the Regen river. According to a piece of parchment hung in the church arch, it was built in 1473 in Gothic style in honor of John the Baptist and John the Evangelist . It was probably financed by the lord of the castle in Au. In 1648 the parish church of St. Michael was destroyed by fire during an attack by the Swedes. Therefore, parish services were held in the branch church until 1657. In June 1733 the original altar was replaced by a baroque high altar. In 1764 the roof structure burned out after a lightning strike, but the fire did not spread to the interior. When the roof structure was restored, the nave was raised by one meter. The Gothic portal was preserved. The pulpit is from the 18th century in the Rococo style. In 1836 the positive was replaced by a used organ, which has been repaired several times since then. Since a bell had to be delivered to the state during the First World War , the church now has a bell.

When the parish of Regen was reorganized after secularization and the church was declared dispensable, the church was to be demolished by order of the regional court. However, the cancellation was delayed by the Regener until the decision was repealed.

The church was damaged at the end of World War II and was not renovated until the early 1960s. Since then there have been three major renovations (1974, 1977–1980 and 1999). Today the church is used for weekly Sunday services, weddings and concerts.

organ

organ

The historical organ of St. Johann deserves special mention - an instrument that was built in 1703. According to the type of construction, the builder was probably Sebastian Wild from Kirchenrohrbach. At least the case is original. Until secularization it stood in a church in the Aldersbach monastery . The parish of Regen bought it in 1836 from an organ builder from Passau. The organ was last restored in 2000 by the organ building company Eisenbarth (Passau). The instrument has 7 registers, 6 of which are manual registers and one pedal register, and is tuned according to Valotti.
