The Regener Parish Church of St. Michael is an over the centuries by various architectural styles influenced church . Today's church building consists of two towers, an old and a new building and an integrated side chapel . Church patron is the Archangel Michael .

History of origin

The first documented mention of a small wooden church comes from the year 1148. The first construction should have taken place around 1035. Around the year 1100 the massive defense tower standing right next to it was built .

Around 1270 a Romanesque church was built on the site of the wooden church. The small church tower of this is still preserved today. In the church there is a copy of the Regener Madonna from 1390 .

In 1473 the nave was rebuilt in the Gothic style, connected to the fortified tower (now the west tower) and a choir was added at the end. The west tower got a tent roof . Only several windows in the west tower remain from the Gothic building. The body of Christ , a late Gothic work from around 1500, still hangs over the altar today . Only the cross bar was replaced several times, most recently in 2003. The font is from 1607.

Romanesque church tower

During the Thirty Years' War the church was burned down by the Swedes. Until the new building in the years 1655–1657, the services took place in the Sankt Johann church . In the new church, altars in plait style were set up ( baroque ). Two figures of St. Sebastian and St. Nepomuk from the 18th century stand in the side chapel. Ten supporting poles with figures of saints are attached to the side walls of today's old building. The Rococo work , dating from around 1750, used to be worn by the individual guilds during processions .

Interior between 1936 and 1966

During an extensive interior renovation in 1861, the church was furnished in a new Romanesque style. At the end of the 20th century, three figures from this institution were erected again: Mother of God , St. Michael and St. Florian . The nave was extended in 1927. In 1936 the neo-Romanesque facility was removed and replaced with a new facility. From this 1936 altar there are two oil paintings on wood hanging to the left and right of the organ , which then adorned the side wings. In the same year Josef Oberberger designed three glass windows with scenes from the life of St. Gunther , which were later removed and two of which have been preserved in the reading room of the Bishop's Central Archives in Regensburg.

1966–1969 the nave was extended to the east with a modern new building. The altar island was built in the middle of the old and new buildings. The windows in the old and new buildings date from 1968. The organ was built in 1962/1968 with two manuals , 31 registers and around 1800 pipes. The Way of the Cross in bronze is from the year 1970th

From 2001 to 2003 the last redesign of the interior took place. The altar island moved from the center of the church to the east wall in the new building. The new altar wall shows motifs from the Canticle of the Sun of St. Francis of Assisi . The sacristy was moved from the east to the west tower.

On the south-western outside of the church there is a mount of Olives from the middle of the 19th century , which was originally built on the east side.

Marienkapelle (side chapel)

The newly designed chancel

The side chapel, at the entrance of which the Gothic Madonna and a very free copy of the miraculous image of Maria Plain from Regen are attached, has been called the Lady Chapel since the last renovation. Because of its previous function, it was called the sacrament or baptistery; the name was changed because the tabernacle was moved to the altar and the baptismal font was moved to the center of the church. The first name of this chapel was Frauenkirche. The balcony, which is no longer accessible today, was accessible through a transition from the former convent until the end of the 20th century.

The bell

The two towers now have onion roofs instead of the tent roof . There are six church bells in the bell cage of the west tower : At 3470 kg, the Pummerin , created in 1968, is the heaviest of the bells. The 1500 kg and 800 kg bells with the image of the Queen of Heaven date from 1649 . The Ludovicus , cast in 1770, is the fourth largest bell. The death bell dates from 1761. On the bell, made in 1762, you can see Mary with the child and a crucifixion group. In the course of the last renovation work, a bell from 1709 was rediscovered in the Romanesque tower.
