St. Johann Baptist is a Catholic parish church in Affaltrach , a district of the Obersulm community in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg .

history

The church was built in 1898/1899 according to plans by Richard Raisch and was solemnly consecrated on October 28, 1899 by Bishop Paul Wilhelm von Keppler . Previously, the Affaltracher Johanneskirche had served Protestants and Catholics as a simultaneous church.

When designing the church in the style of historicism , elements of late Romanesque and early Gothic were taken up. The church was originally richly painted in the choir and on the choir arch by the painter Felix Mayser from Neckarsulm. The high altar in the choir and the two side altars were made by Josef Stark in Nuremberg, whereby the Marien altar on the left of the choir arch was matched to the high altar.

During a renovation in 1957, the painting of the church was painted over and the altars were greatly simplified. Further renovations inside followed in 1962, 1976 and 1984/1985, the outer facade was renovated from 1993 to 1996.

Furnishing

The most important art treasures of the church are the wooden figures in the choir and above the side altars. The left side altar is adorned with an Apocalyptic Madonna from around 1460–1470, which shows stylistic influences from the Ulm School . The frame of the figure dates from the 19th century. Above the right side altar and on the right choir wall there are four standing figures of St. Mary, St. John the Evangelist, St. John the Baptist and Barbara. These figures date from around 1480 and, possibly together with the small crucifix also located above the right side altar, once adorned a St. John's altar in the St. John's Church, which was used simultaneously, before they were taken over in 1899 after the new building of the Catholic Church.

The organ was built by the organ building workshop Gebr. Späth in Ennetach .
