description

building

The eastern parts of the three-aisled basilica with transept and choir, probably completed in 1135, have been preserved. At the end of the 17th century this was converted into a Protestant parish church. The choir was extended in the Gothic style as early as the 14th century. This can be seen in the large tracery window and coffin cornice in its east wall , which continues about two meters on the side walls of the choir. The corners of the cross arms are framed by pilaster strips . Round-arched arcades to the side aisles can be seen in the walling of their west sides, the sloping abutments have been preserved, the abutments of the crossing piers were knocked off. In the southern arm of the cross, the remains were walled up with palmette and chessboard friezes . The crossing arches were broken out.

In the west wall of the north cross wing there is a round arched portal into which a larger tympanum is placed. This possibly originates from the former main portal of the monastery church and is dated around 1200 and the consecration in 1206. In the middle is the half-length Mary with the child between a kneeling bishop with a church model on the left and the angel Gabriel on the right. Next to it is the half-length figure of a monk, which is believed to represent the first abbot of the monastery. There is a circumferential inscription in the arch field.

The western vestibule with a portal framed and gabled by pilasters, the sacristy on the north side of the choir with the former mansion box on its upper floor and the eight-sided tower with dome and lantern come from the renovation in the 17th century. This is located above the original crossing of the building. The rectangular windows of the church also date from this period.

Interior and equipment

The interior of the church was lavishly decorated at the beginning of the 18th century. Worth mentioning is the stucco ceiling, which frames the ceiling paintings in laurel wreaths with winged putti. In between there are bands and tendrils with fleeing angels . The ceiling paintings depict scenes from the life of Christ and angel figures.

The wooden altarpiece with a large picture of a Gethsemane depiction is framed by Ionic columns and pilasters. Above the entablature of the altar is a small attachment with an oval picture depicting the risen Christ. There is a carved angel on either side of it.

In the church there is a large nine-sided late Gothic sandstone baptism.

The simple wooden pulpit is located on a winding foliage column. Like the ceiling, the flat arched openings of the former manor's box are decorated with an elaborate stucco decoration. In the cross arms of the church there are carved galleries.

The organ, created by Johann Christoph Mocker in 1728, was given a new prospectus in 1824.
