Design of the church

St. Josef, also known as "Rather Dom", is a three - aisled neo - Romanesque basilica with a transept and a cruciform floor plan. A two- tower facade with a vestibule is included. The crossing is highlighted with an octagonal tower and extensions.

The main towers are four-story and 45 m high.

The central nave has a ribbed vault , the side aisles have a square vault. In the area between the towers and the transept, the upper row of windows is designed with four windows on each side, divided into three round arches that protrude from under a larger arch. In the area behind the transept, on the other hand, there are two double-arched windows in the upper row of windows. The lower row of windows is made up of four single arches between the towers and the transept; behind the transept, only one triple arch can be seen on each side. The transept has two single arched windows at the bottom and a large round window at the top.

St. Josef was built according to plans by the Düsseldorf architect Josef Kleesattel . This was based on the Maria Laach abbey church in the Eifel. The interior painting, which was largely destroyed by an air raid in 1944 - the depiction of the four archangels in the crossing was preserved - was carried out by Heinrich Nüttgens .

history

prehistory

The catchment area of St. Josef in Rath belonged to the parish of St. Maria unter dem Kreuze until the end of the 19th century. Rath grew enormously as a result of the settlement of industries and the influx of workers and their families in the course of the industrial revolution from the 1870s, so that there was a need for another church in the community area.

An initiative to found another Catholic church from 1895 led to the establishment of a Rectorate of St. Joseph dependent on St. Maria under the Cross. A small Romanesque church was built from the funds of a foundation and consecrated in 1898 by the responsible auxiliary bishop Fischer .

In 1903 St. Josef was raised to an independent community. Due to the constant influx of working people to Rath, however, the church soon became too small.

Building history

In 1905 the foundation stone was laid for today's neo-Romanesque basilica. The construction work lasted until 1909. The architect Josef Kleesattel based his plans on the Abbey of St. Maria Laach .

In order to keep the transitional period, in which no church building was available, as short as possible, the choir and transept were added to the existing church before the old church was torn down and the new nave was built. In this construction phase, the completed transept was used as a church service room.

In 1909, the meanwhile Archbishop of Cologne and Cardinal Fischer consecrated the new basilica.

After completion

After the First World War, the inside of the Josefskirche was painted in color.

St. Joseph's Church was partially destroyed during an air raid in 1944 during World War II.

The reconstruction took place until 1955 under the direction of Ludger Kösters . The external appearance was restored true to the original, but the interior construction was somewhat simplified.

A restoration took place from 1972 to 1981.

Bells

The church has a five-part ringing of bronze bells, which were cast in 1909 by the renowned Otto bell foundry from Hemelingen / Bremen. The bells survived the confiscation and destruction of bells during the two world wars. They have a total weight of 7056 kg. The bells, like all Otto bells, were consecrated according to the old pre-Conventional bell consecration rite.
