St. Josef (Nördlingen)
St. Josef is a Catholic parish church in Nördlingen . It is named after St. Josef , the worker, is located outside the completely preserved city wall ring and includes the building area in the southeast of the city of Nördlingen, the “Wemdinger Viertel”, which grew in the post-war period.
In 1962, the Church of St. Joseph the Worker was completed and consecrated. The independent parish of St. Josef was founded in 1964.
History of origin
After the Second World War, Nördlingen's population rose from 9,200 to just under 14,000 as a result of expulsion , flight and resettlement as well as many immigration from Ries communities . A steadily growing settlement area emerged along the road to Wemding , the “Wemdinger Viertel”, almost half of which was Catholic. The then parish priest of St. Salvator , Josef Hoser, recognized the need for a religious center for this new residential area and had a new church built, which was consecrated in the name of "Joseph the Worker". The impressive building of the St. Josef Church rises in the middle of the district. On the one hand, it blends harmoniously into the architecture of the Wemdinger Quarter, on the other hand, it stands out from the cubic residential, commercial and industrial buildings due to its special architectural style. Due to the almost oval floor plan, there are no hard edges. As in early Christian times, the 24-meter-high round white tower stands as a campanile to the northeast, slightly away from the church.
