former church and former hospital St. Jost

The St. Jost Manorial Hospital with an attached church in Český Krumlov in South Bohemia was established in the 14th century. The building complex has been a listed building since May 3, 1958.

history

Peter I von Rosenberg had the hospital and chapel built probably in 1317 (at least before 1334) in gratitude for the birth of his son Jost I von Rosenberg . In addition, churches, chapels and hospitals were often consecrated along pilgrimage routes to Saint Jodok , the patron saint of pilgrims and travelers. The hospital was intended for 13 people and was expanded to 17 units in 1364. Only insignificant remains of the Gothic buildings have survived.

In 1596 Peter Wok von Rosenberg had the architect Domenico Benedetto Cometta build a new church in the Renaissance style. In 1598 the Church of the Holy Trinity was consecrated and handed over to the Český Krumlov Protestants, which led to a dispute with the Prague Archbishop Zbynko Berka . After the indebted Peter Wok Cesky Krumlov, however, had sold and 1602 after Trebon Castle (German Wittingau) had moved, the church was in the same year the Padres from the Jesuit College passed for the German sermons (the Czech Catholic church services were held in the St. Vitus Church held ). A few years later the church was given the old name of St. Jost again.

In the years 1708–1710 the number of hospital residents was increased to 24.

Emperor Joseph II had the hospital and church closed in 1787. While the tower became the property of the community, the nave and the hospital courtyard to the east were auctioned. The businessman Klement Pöschl and the hat maker Karel Neumüller set up a town house with brewing rights . During this reconstruction, the presbytery of the church was torn down and an entrance was built in its place. Cellars were re-excavated and the level of the ground floor increased. Karel Neumüller took over sole ownership of the property in 1802 and converted it into a casino with a bar and a dance hall on the upper floor. After 1900 the property was used exclusively as a residential building. Around 1920, the Baťa company set up a sales point there, and in 1938 a storage room for a shop selling bicycles and motorcycles was built on the river side. In 1937, the northern side on the road was redesigned.

The former, asymmetrical, double-nave church with a gallery above the narrower south aisle is covered with a steep gable roof. The five-story tower has a dome and a lantern.

There are shops, a restaurant and a puppet museum in the building complex. Since July 2020, a small exhibition in the high attic of the building and the tower can be viewed for a small entrance fee.
