The Třeboň Castle ( German Wittingau ) is located in the center of the town of the same name Třeboň in the Czech Republic . The castle has been a listed building since May 3, 1958 and has been listed as a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic since January 1, 2002 . The entrance to the castle is on the southwest corner of the main square.
history
A fortress originally stood on the site of today's castle . From 1479 to 1482 it was converted into a castle by Wok II von Rosenberg , who resided in Wittingau. In 1522 two side wings were built. Under Wilhelm von Rosenberg , the builder Antonio Ericer converted it into a Renaissance palace from 1565 to 1575 . At the same time, the southwest wing, the entrance gate and a tower were added. During the time of Wilhelm von Rosenberg, the alchemists John Dee and Edward Kelley also lived here (late 1580s). Kelley conducted alchemical experiments here. Here there was also a break between Dee and Kelley in 1589.
Further changes were made from 1599 to 1611 according to plans by Domenico Benedetto Cometta during the reign of Peter Wok von Rosenberg , who resided in Wittingau from 1602. He moved the Český Krumlov family archive, which was managed by the Rosenberg archivist and chronicler Václav Březan , to the Wittingau chateau, where it is still part of the largest collection of the Bohemian aristocratic archive.
The next owners of the castle were from 1611 the Lords of Schwanberg and from 1622 the House of Habsburg . Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria ceded it to the princes Schwarzenberg in 1660 . In the 18th century they initiated further modifications and extensions, which also included stables and a warehouse as well as the baroque administration building. In 1874 the Schwarzenbergs erected their family crypt in a park near the neighboring village of Domanín . In the 20th century the archives of the Schwarzenberg princes were relocated from Kornhaus Castle to Wittingau Castle.
description
The castle houses one of the most important archives in the Czech Republic. It is therefore only partially accessible to the public. In addition to the beautiful Renaissance staircase, the Rosenberg coat of arms hall and the courtiers' hall can be visited. The fountain in the courtyard was created by Paul Ignaz Bayer in 1712 . The large palace park with old trees is freely accessible.
