The Nové Hrady Castle (German Burg Gratzen ) is located in Nové Hrady near the Austrian border in Okres České Budějovice , Czech Republic. It is also called the Old Castle to distinguish it from the New Castle .

history

The Gothic castle was probably built in the first half of the 13th century. The client may have been the Kostka von Postupitz family . In 1279, the year it was first mentioned, the facility was owned by an Ojíř from the Witigones family . Despite the largest moat in Bohemia , it was sacked several times . In the castle came in 1579 to the explosion of gunpowder , and finally it was in 1590 also damaged by an earthquake. For this reason, the lords of the castle, it was the Landsteiners until 1359 , then the Rosenbergs and from 1620 the Charles Bonaventure de Longueval , had to rebuild the castle more often. The facility was inhabited until 1750. Since 2001 it has had the status of a national cultural monument .

Near the castle is the Terčino údolí Landscape Park with an artificial waterfall.
