St. Katharina in Reuth
Acanthus altar

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Katharina in Reuth near Erbendorf was built not far from the castle as a former castle chapel. It was built in 1717 at the time of the lord of the palace, Johann Christian Ernst von Sparneck .

Of particular artistic value is the monstrance-shaped high altar of the church made of acanthus carvings , the work of the sculptor and carpenter Johann Christoph Windisch , which was created between 1717 and 1720.

The altarpiece shows Saint Catherine , the picture above the adoration of the Magi. The idea of using the Mediterranean acanthus plant as an imaginatively carved framework for the creation of the altar is original.
