St. Catherine (Znaim)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Catherine Church was a church in the town of Znojmo (Znaim) in the Czech Republic .

history

The St. Katharina Church in what was then the upper suburb went back to a foundation from the master baker Christian Corada in 1702. The building was financed from his private assets and donations. The town council of Znojmo provided the necessary building site free of charge, as the place of execution and the burial place of the executed persons used to be located here and there were no interested parties in the area.

The new church was consecrated on November 25, 1705 by Karl Tesch, dean at the St. Niklas Church in Znojmo, who also held the services here.

Christian Corada, whose lay son belonged to the Carmelite Order in Vienna - Leopoldstadt , also added a few small apartments to the St. Katharina Church , so that the entire complex resembled a monastery. In 1714 Corada initiated the necessary steps to allow the building to be made available to the Carmelite Order for the establishment of a hospice . The dean of Znojmo, who saw no need for a third mendicant monastery in the city, spoke out against this plan . The consistory in Olomouc shared this view, because despite the promises to donate various realities to the future monastery , there was no belief in an economically secure existence.

After the abolition of Klosterbruck monastery , the parishes in Znojmo had to be redistributed. The Church of St. Catherine was elevated to a parish church under the patronage of the Moravian Religious Fund. The former Premonstratensian priest Otto Lentl , who came from Klosterbruck Abbey, was appointed pastor .

The St. Catherine Church received the equipment necessary for the services from the liturgical equipment of the abolished monasteries. The second church bell came from the Znojmo Franciscan monastery . In the same year a third bell was donated.

In 1825 the parish of St. Catherine was abolished and the parish of the Holy Cross in the Znojmo Dominican monastery was incorporated. The church was recognized as expendable, desecrated and sold in favor of the Moravian Religious Fund on January 10, 1825 in the auction path to the city of Znojmo.

After renovations, the resulting residential building on Pragerstraße was used as a quarter for traveling Jews, as according to the legal situation at the time, they were not allowed to live within the city walls.
