St. Catherine's

The Evangelical Lutheran village church of St. Katharinen , also called St. Katharina , is located in the Frankenroda community in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

history

The church has been expanded and renewed over and over again over the centuries. The nave was given its shape in 1781. At that time, the nave was raised and the room was spanned with a barrel-shaped wooden ceiling. The rectangular and smooth doors and windows are more recent. A pointed arched window in the nave is the exception.

The tower

The square church tower is on the east side. It was renewed in 1704. The choir is formed on the ground floor with two windows from the Romanesque period . Its rib-less cross vault with pointed arched caps is evidence of medieval architecture. The original Romanesque triumphal arch was later rebuilt into a pointed arch. After a lightning strike in the tower in 1887, its upper floor was built as a brick building with a short octagonal helmet . After a reconstruction in 1988, the tower got its former shape again.

Renovation

Since the renovation in 1956, the church shines again in the splendor of yesteryear. Fifteenth- century frescoes were uncovered. They show pictures of Christian history. There is a crucifix on the square stone altar . An extensive interior renovation took place from 1990 to 1992.
