St. Lawrence Church

The St. Laurentius Church is the Protestant church of the Frohse part of the town of Schönebeck (Elbe) .

History and architecture

A Laurentiuskirche is said to have existed in Frohse as early as 1016. A bronze bell from the 13th century still exists from this early period. In 1548 a new building took place in the same place. The previous building was either destroyed in the Schmalkaldic War or otherwise dilapidated. Another new building of the nave took place in 1724. The old nave, which was destroyed in the Thirty Years War , was torn down and replaced by a simple, single-aisle new building in the Baroque style. The church tower to the west of the nave, which dates back to the Middle Ages, was included. In 1861, however, the old church tower was also torn down. By 1862 the church was rebuilt to its current appearance with two towers in the neo-Romanesque style.

The interior of the church was also redesigned. In 1882 the church received three bronze chandeliers . Windows decorated with stained glass were purchased for three altar church windows. They showed the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence , Christ and the Evangelist John . Two other windows showed mosaic pictures made of English cathedral glass .

While the old church bell escaped destruction by melting down, probably due to its age-related high cultural value, the altar windows were destroyed shortly before the end of the war. During a bombing raid on the Frohse substation on February 14, 1945, all the altar windows were also broken.

Newly built church windows were inaugurated on Easter Sunday 1956. Three windows were designed by the Schönebeck glass designer Christof Grüger (1926–2014) and their motifs deal with Christmas, Easter and Whitsun.

Due to the great need for renovation of the Laurentiuskirche, which the small parish could not finance, the last service took place in 1978, and in 1979 the church was abandoned. Most of the church was cleared and fell into disrepair. From 1983 the building department of the Protestant church district Schönebeck used the church building. In 1991 it was leased to a construction company that emerged from the church building department.

After the renovation of the church towers began in 2001, the roof of the nave was re-covered in 2002. In 2007/08 an extension was built on the north side in which the sanitary facilities and a storage room were to be housed. However, in 2010 a new usage concept arose for the annex, which was initially built in the shell. In May 2012 it was inaugurated as a community room.

The chancel of the church was separated from the rest of the nave by a semicircular wall. On Whit Monday 2014, the chancel of the church was consecrated again as a place of worship. The nave is still used by a construction company.
