St. Laurence

St. Laurentius is the Roman Catholic parish church of Langförden , a district of Vechta . It was built in the years 1910–1912 according to plans by Ludwig Becker . The church is under the patronage of St. Lawrence .

architecture

St. Laurentius is a neo-Romanesque east-facing basilica of stylistic unity and with a length of 43 meters and a width of 23 meters of cathedral-like dimensions. The three-aisled nave complements a transept of the same height as a cross. The crossing is crowned by a twelve- sided crossing tower . A semicircular apse forms the east end . The west facade with its 46-meter-high pair of towers, a large rose window in the gable and three portal arches has a strong long-distance effect . The entire building is clad on the outside with Ibbenbürener sandstone and structured with blind arcades , arched friezes and pilaster strips . While the north tower has a cross at the top, there is a weathercock above the cross on the south tower. Clocks with dials hang on the west, south and east flanks of the south tower and on the north flank of the north tower.

Inside, the wall surfaces are plastered white. Only arches and services are highlighted in gray, some capitals also have sparing color accents.

Furnishing

Most of the original furnishings were created at the beginning of the 20th century for today's building. The high altar shows a triumphal cross in the middle , plus images that revolve around the theme of the Eucharist and sacrifice . The sandstone pulpit bears a relief in the Nazarene style showing Christ teaching the people. Biblical scenes and saints can be seen on the ornate stained glass windows .

The organ was built in 1980 by the Osnabrück company Orgelbau Kreienbrink .

Tower of the old Laurentiuskirche

The prayer corner with the Pietà - acquired in 1912 for the consecration of the church - invites you to linger. The statue of the pastor's patron from the previous building is still preserved - the statue of Laurentius currently in the church was purchased around 1912.

The oldest piece is the font from around 1000, which was already in the old Laurentiuskirche.

history

The first church in “Longanforda” is documented as early as 890, from which the churches of St. Georg in Vechta and St. Marien in Oythe were founded. The previous church of today's basilica was built in 1011 in the unadorned pre-Romanesque style from boulders . It received the patronage of the Roman deacon and martyr Laurentius and was the center and baptismal church. Its furnishings were adapted to the prevailing taste in the 18th and 19th centuries, but hardly any structural changes were made.

At the turn of the 20th century this church was finally too small and the parish decided to build a new, spacious church. For this purpose, the old nave was completely demolished and its stones used as the foundation for the new church. However, the thousand year old bell tower has been preserved and symbolizes the historical continuity.
