St. Laurentius Ebersheim

The Catholic Church of St. Laurentius was first mentioned in a bull by Pope Lucius III in 1184 . mentioned to the monastery of St. Alban . At that time, Ebersheim was transferred to the monastery as a whole.

The oldest part of today's church is the central nave, which was built between 1724 and 1729. The church tower was only built in 1768 and is 42.40 meters high. At the top there is a cross with a weathercock . There are clocks on all sides of the church tower; every hour on the hour is displayed with the corresponding number of chimes. In 1908 the church, which had become too small, was enlarged, the main nave lengthened, the side aisles each with a small portal added, the choir replaced with a new one and a sacristy added.

The chime consists of a large, medium and small bell, all made of bronze. The big bell weighs 1200 kilograms, is tuned to the tone Es and is dedicated to the Holy Trinity . The middle bell bears the inscription: " Konrad Gobel poured me in Frankfurt in 1557." During the Second World War it had to be handed in for the production of war material in 1942, but it was found in Hamburg after the war and returned in 1947. The bell in the middle weighs 845 kilograms, is tuned to the tone f and named after Saint Elizabeth . The smallest bell weighs 510 kilograms, is tuned to the note A-flat and is named Maria .

Through the main portal you enter the bell house , from which the bells used to be rung. On the right side hangs a mission cross from the Töngeshof from the 18th century . In the main aisle there is the high altar, originally from the Church of St. Quintin in Mainz , and the confessionals on both sides . An oil painting in the center of the altar shows the martyrdom of Laurentius . The picture was only painted after the transfer from Mainz. Jesus crucified with Mary of Magdala kneeling in front of him is depicted in the upper part of the altar. Four wood-carved statues can be seen on the altar: top left Mary, Queen of Martyrs , top right St. John the Apostle , bottom right St. Rochus and left John the Baptist . In the middle is the tabernacle , which is worshiped by two kneeling angels.

The altars in the side aisles date from the 18th century and were made to match the high altar. On the left, the rosary or St. Mary's altar, there is a baroque Madonna and Child. The altarpiece shows Mary handing the rosary to Saint Dominic . In addition, the figures of John of Nepomuk and Aloisius of Gonzaga are on the altar . On the right altar, the Nicholas altar, a figure of St. Nicholas and the image of St. Barbara can be seen. Two other figures represent Catherine of Alexandria and St. Margaret . On the ceiling of the nave there is a painting with three scenes from the life of St. Lawrence : his departure from Pope Sixtus II. Laurentius shows the Roman governor the poor as the true Treasures of the Church and its sentencing to death.

In the rear nave there is the gallery with a representation of Jesus and his apostles . The organ with 21 stops in 2 manuals and a pedal is on the gallery. It was built in the second half of the 18th century by the organ builder Joseph Anton Onimus .
