The branch church of St. Magdalene Church ( Kostel sv. (Maří) Magdalény in Czech ) is a church building consecrated to St. Mary Magdalene in the district of Svatá Magdaléna von Volary in Okres Prachatice in South Bohemia in the Czech Republic .

history

The patronage of the chapel is in the dark, but it can be assumed that it was already the penitent Mary Magdalene who was venerated in Bohemia in the Augustinian order. The chapel was destroyed in the Hussite Wars . A chapel is mentioned again in the 16th century. On the corridor of a forest glassworks belonging to Volary, three large farms were built in the 16th century, called "St. Magdalena".

In the early 18th century there was talk of many miraculous healings. According to legend, there was a linden tree at the site of today's altar, and when the attempt was made to fell it, a figure of St. Magdalena was found in it. The influx of pilgrims grew, there was talk of healing the blind, the deaf and the paralyzed. The figure of grace was brought to Oberhaid , 3.5 km away , but has always miraculously returned to its old place. It is certain that the Chapel of St. Magdalena was an important and well-known place of pilgrimage as early as the beginning of the 17th century. The Chapel of St. Magdalena had considerable capital at its disposal through the sacrificial money of the faithful.

From the year 1739 it is known that the chapel had become dilapidated and was close to collapse, whereupon the patron saint Prince Josef Adam zu Schwarzenberg commissioned the builder Anton Erhard Martinelli with the planning for a new church. The construction was only carried out after Martinelli's death under the direction of the Český Krumlov palace builder Franz Fortin. On the Magdalenentag 1754, July 22nd, the pastor of Waller consecrated the church in honor of St. Magdalena. A small bell hung in the tower, and a second bell was added in 1763. When the framework of the pear-shaped tower dome was damaged in 1797, the tower was given a pyramid roof. A turret above the entrance on the front has also been removed. The interior of the church underwent changes in the 19th century.

Until the restoration of the parish of Oberhaid in 1891, St. Magdalena belonged to the parish of Volary as a side church. On the Sunday after Magdalena, the local pastor held a service and the faithful came from the surrounding parishes.

Since the 1960s, the church and its furnishings fell into disrepair . The donations made it possible to restore the baroque building in 1993/95 thanks to the commitment of the St. Magdalena Support Group in Augsburg, chaired by Otto Lang (1918–1999) in cooperation with Dean František Honsa from Volary. During the patronage on July 22nd, a church service takes place every year, to which Germans resettled after the Second World War come to their old homeland.
