history

Surname

The church and its parish was named after the Bremen district of St. Magnus. This takes its name from a chapel that was located on a hill on the banks of the Lesum in today's Knoops Park. The street Am Kapellenberg is supposed to remind of the chapel, the exact location of which is unknown. "Today it can no longer be proven exactly after which Magnus first the chapel, later the manor, the settlement and then the place was named" wrote Friedrich Spengemann in 1931.

Old chapel

It is believed that the chapel stood near today's Villa Schotteck. Friedrich Spengemann writes: “During excavation work for the construction of the villa in 1892, many human bones were found. So it was the cemetery around the chapel. ”Two old grave slabs are said to have been moved from the cemetery site to the Lesum churchyard around 1800. An old church bell that hangs in the tower of the church in Bremen Horn today is the only witness to the chapel. The bell bears both the inscription sanctus magnus and the coat of arms of the knights of Oumünde.

Interior

An architectural competition was held for the new construction of St. Magni Church, which Hermann Brede won. The parish decided on a design by Eberhard Gildemeister , who had already built the Lehnhofsiedlung nearby . By 1967, the system, consisting of several individual buildings, was built for the parish of St. Magni according to his plans: the free-standing, 34-meter-high bell tower made of exposed concrete, the church with the rounded gable wall and the parish rooms - both with gable roofs and made of brick masonry. The entrance to the church leads under the tower.

The architecture guide bremen writes: “The church itself shows echoes of regional building types with its low roof and the brick masonry on the front sides. With some surprising details, such as the circular skylights in the roof area, the architect also sets highly individual accents, which even get an expressive note in the tower ”.

The courtyard was partially enclosed by open pergolas. The font comes from the sculptor Hedilor Boehringer-Gildemeister (* 1916).

Parish

In 1965 the districts of St. Magnus and Schönebeck as well as the Lower Saxony villages of Löhnhorst , Leuchtenburg , Brundorf and Eggestedt together became their own parish. The services took place in the rooms of the Villa Tannenhof (so-called "Hackfeldsche Villa", behind the current church). It is still used today for child and youth work. In addition, an assembly church from the emergency church program of the Bremen Evangelical Church (BEK) was built in the Schönebeck district in 1964 ( Schönebeck wooden church ).

The congregation belongs to the North Region of the Bremen Evangelical Church , is divided into two parishes and has five preaching sites:

  • St. Magni Church (Bremen)
  • Wooden Church Schönebeck (Bremen)
  • Parish hall Löhnhorst (Lower Saxony)
  • Eggestedt cemetery chapel (Lower Saxony)
  • Brundorf cemetery chapel (Lower Saxony)

The community is responsible for two kindergartens, St. Magnus and Löhnhorst.
