The Catholic branch church of St. Margarethe in Öbervöls at the foot of the Schlern , a fraction of the municipality of Völs am Schlern , is a late Gothic architectural monument.

history

The church of St. Margareth in Obervöls is mentioned in a document as early as 1397 under the patronage of St. Laurentius . A sanctuary on this porphyry rock is suspected much earlier. Around 1500, a Gothic church was built on the foundations of the Romanesque predecessor building and consecrated to Saints Margaret and Laurentius in 1502 by the auxiliary bishop of Bressanone, Konrad .

Around 1600 Ferdinand von Khuepach arranged for the beam ceiling to be replaced by a net vault and for the tower to be built. As part of the major interior renovation from 1974 to 1979, numerous wall and ceiling paintings from the Renaissance around 1600 were uncovered and preserved.

Furnishing

In addition to the Renaissance paintings, the main attraction in the church is the late Gothic winged altar with an early Baroque attachment in the form of an altar extension. The central shrine shows a crucifixion group with Mary and John, to the side are two angels who collect the blood of Christ in four goblets, and four angels with the instruments of passion. The side wings have half-relief pictures, on the left the Saints Laurentius and Katharina, and on the right the Saints Margareth and Afra. In the center of the essay is the Holy Trinity with two dolphins on the side and the risen Christ in the gable above.

The wall and ceiling paintings show the death of Mary , the Lamentation of Christ , the Annunciation , the Crucifixion of Christ , God the Father with the Holy Spirit , Adam and Eve , the Mount of Olives scene and the Last Judgment .

The renaissance pulpit (around 1525) has bas-reliefs depicting Saints Margaret and Laurentius, attributed to Peter Dosser.
