St. Mary's Assumption (Düsseldorf-Unterbach)

St. Mary of the Assumption

St. Assumption is the only Catholic Church as well as the name of the corresponding parish in Düsseldorf district Unterbach . The church was built in 1963 by Josef Lehmbrock .

The Unterbach district emerged from the Unterbach estate , and from the 15th century onwards, spiritual welfare is evidenced by a court chapel. Unterbach has been an independent parish since 1897.

On the outskirts of Unterbach, the new Wittenbruchplatz settlement was built from 1957 according to Lehmbrock's plans, where the architect himself lived for many years. While the settlement mainly consists of brick houses, exposed concrete was chosen as the building material for the church , in the style of brutalism . The floor plan of the church is octagonal, as is the free-standing church tower next to it, an extension with a choir and sacristy is attached to the side of the octagon . The church is made entirely of exposed concrete - including the ceiling, which is supported by four pillars inside the church and is intended to symbolize the tent of God among the people. It is pierced with light openings that sit between the tent and the dome. The main altar room is enclosed in a semicircular exposed concrete shell, behind which a small side altar is hidden. Four corners of the room have floor-to-ceiling windows made of structured glass.

The church was built between 1963 and 1964 and renovated between 1981 and 1982. The church was consecrated on June 16, 1983.

Not far from today's location there was a previous church of the same name from 1883 to 1967.

St. Mariä Himmelfahrt is the only Catholic church in the city of Düsseldorf that is not assigned to its city dean's office. The associated parish of the same name has a branch in the neighboring Erkrath-Unterfeldhaus and, with St. John the Baptist in Erkrath, has formed a pastoral community in the Hilden dean's office, Mettmann district dean of the Archdiocese of Cologne, since January 1, 2010 .

Joachim Vobbe , who later became bishop and thus the highest representative of the Old Catholic Church in Germany, worked in St. Mary's Assumption until his conversion.
