St. John the Baptist is a Roman Catholic parish church in (Alt-) Erkrath .
history
Exact dates about the beginning and duration of the church construction as well as the owner are unknown. It is believed that the initiative to build the church came from the Kaiserswerth monastery or the Gerresheim monastery . The core structure of the church ( west tower , nave , choir square with apse ) was probably built in the 2nd half of the 12th century. This building was already significantly larger than the churches in the region. The patronage of the church was exercised by the gentlemen from Haus Unterbach , who were also buried in the church.
In the 14th century, the central nave and the tower hall were equipped with ribbed vaults .
In 1700 the tower received a new portal and a curly baroque helmet . After a restoration in 1883 by the architect Füßhaus, the subsequent growth of the place and the community made an expansion necessary. In 1901/02 the simple, medieval choir was torn down and replaced by a spacious, historicizing Neo-Romanesque choir pushed out over the new crossing and an additional transept with sacristy . The architect was the Cologne cathedral builder Heinrich Renard .
architecture
The church is a Romanesque basilica with a west tower , three - aisled four - bay nave , transept with rose window and choir square with apse and two choir-side towers. To the east is a sacristy . The exterior of the quarry stone shows Romanesque decorative and structural elements made of tuff on all wall surfaces . A stair tower is built in one corner .
Due to its considerable dimensions, St. John the Baptist is an urban dominant in Erkrath .

organ
The original organ was from the Fabricius workshop in Grevenbroich . It was also used again after the church was expanded. In 1970 the organ building workshop Gebrüder Stockmann in Werl built today's organ . The organ has 2 manuals and a pedal with a total of 21 stops. The old organ was sold to St. Johannes Evangelist in Hilden and restored. As one of the few remaining Fabricius organs, it still plays there today.
