St. Mary Queen

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Maria Königin , Krahnenburgstrasse in Düsseldorf-Lichtenbroich was built from 1956 to 1958 according to plans by the architect Gottfried Böhm , as the growth of the new residential area should be taken into account.

The building "shows a clear proximity to buildings by Mies van der Rohe or Martin Gropius ." The sacred space is a square central building . A tall, pointed tower rises above the cube , which is octagonal and rests on eight bent concrete supports inside the church. The altar is also located here.

At the time of its construction, the church belonged to the parish of St. Maria under the cross in Unterrath . In 1958, the independent parish of St. Maria Königin was established for the Düsseldorf-Lichtenbroich district, but due to the existing shortage of priests it was merged into the Roman Catholic parish Holy Family with more than 13,000 believers on January 1, 2011 . The only parish priest was Monsignor Heinz Müller.
