The Church of the Virgin Mary among the Slavs (Czech Kostel Panny Marie na Slovanech ) is the monastery church of the Emmaus monastery in Prague's New Town .

history

Charles IV founded the three-aisled church on November 21, 1347 as part of the monastery of the Slavic Benedictines - hence the name affix for the Slavs . Construction work was completed in 1372 . In the 17th century, under the Spanish Benedictines (in Prague from 1636 ) , the church was partially baroque and extended by two towers, and the monastery was renamed the Emmauskloster. The Beuron Benedictines carried out a regotization in 1880 .

During the Second World War , St. Mary's Church was badly damaged during the air raid on Prague on February 14, 1945. In the course of the renovation after the war, the two towers were not rebuilt and the church front in the west was designed in modern architecture (1966–69). The Emmauskloster is used today by different groups (e.g. the Ackermann congregation and the German-speaking Catholic congregation in Prague).
