description

Blossom of the silver masonry

The perennial , branched and herbaceous plant reaches heights of growth of 5 to 30 centimeters. The plant with prostrate growth is velvety hairy to bare. The small, egg-shaped to elliptical, prickly-pointed and entire, simple, bare leaves have a short ciliate edge. There are dry-skinned, silvery, shiny, large stipules present.

In the leaf axils there are usually over 8 millimeter wide flower clusters with 4 to 6 millimeters long, conspicuous, silvery bracts . These usually cover the actual, five-fold, very small flower with (double) flower envelope with five briefly awned , roughly equally long, membranous sepals . There are short stamens and reduced petals (or staminodes). The single-chamber ovary with two short style branches is medium-sized. A small discus is formed.

The flowering period is from February to April. Very small and solitary fruits ( achenes , nuts, utricles) are formed in the permanent, membranous calyx.

Occurrence

The silver mason jar is common throughout the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands .

Solid dunes, grass corridors, mostly on sandy soils are preferred as locations.
