Parish Church of St. Maria and Florian

St. Maria and Florian is a Catholic parish church in the Waltenhofen district of Schwangau . It is located directly on the shores of Lake Forggensee .

history

The parish of Waltenhofen was founded in 746 by St. Magnus . A chapel opposite the church still commemorates this incident. According to legend, Magnus hung his cross on an apple tree, marking the holy place for the church. In the same year 746 the first church was consecrated by Bishop Wikterp of Augsburg . The hl. Tosso , who later succeeded Wikterps, became Waltenhofen’s first pastor.

In 1206 the monastery of Sankt Mang in Füssen gave the patronage rights to the diocese of Augsburg . In the Middle Ages, the church was probably enlarged several times. As a result, the crypt of the Knights of Schwangau was built over. Only an extension is documented, which was consecrated on October 29, 1520 by the then Augsburg Auxiliary Bishop Heinrich in honor of the Virgin Mary and St. Florian . Such an early Florians patronage is rare in the Allgäu. St. Florian is called to help against fire and floods.

In 1712 the choir was renovated and re- stuccoed by Johann Franz Marazy from Ettal . Three years later, in 1715, the wooden ceiling in the church was replaced by a stucco flat ceiling. Crown Prince Maximilian had a small oratory built into the church in 1837 . His widow Marie Friederike , Princess of Prussia and Queen of Bavaria, the mother of King Ludwig II and his brother Otto , converted to the Roman Catholic faith on October 12, 1874 in the parish church of St. Maria and Florian. A memorial plaque in the chancel reminds of this.

The last renovations took place in 1971/72 (outside) and 1978 (inside).

In 1721 today's high altar with the life-size statues of St. Tosso and St. Sebastian by the sculptor Anton Sturm from Füssen came into the church. The high altar picture, which shows the Assumption of Mary, was created by the artist Wiederhut in 1862.

The left side altar was created by Josef Stehle in 1749, the right by Jakob Gebier in 1760. The pictures on both side altars are also by Wiederhut (1863).

The crucifix from the 16th century is said to have washed ashore during a flood of the Lech. The pulpit dates from 1720. The pictures on the nave ceiling are by Johann Scherer (1891) and show the Annunciation of Mary, the birth of Jesus, the three holy kings as well as the four evangelists and six other prophets.

The organ dates from 1968.
