The Church of St. Marien is a Catholic church in Ammendorf , a former independent place and today's district of Halle (Saale) in the south of the city. The parish belongs to the parish of St. Franziskus, which has its seat at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Lauchstädter Straße in the Lutherplatz / Thuringian Bahnhof district and belongs to the dean's office in Halle of the Magdeburg diocese .

history

A Catholic church had been built in Ammendorf as early as 1901, as numerous Catholic immigrants from Eichsfeld , Silesia and Poland came to the area around Ammendorf in the course of industrialization since the middle of the 19th century . This church in today's Alfred-Reinhardt-Straße became the parish vicarie in 1918 and on June 1, 1957 the independent parish of St. Marien.

In the years from 1979 , the large housing estate Silberhöhe , characterized by prefabricated buildings , was built in the south of the city of Halle, which was intended in particular to cover the housing needs of the employees of the surrounding large companies, such as the Leuna and Buna works , and extended west to the Ammendorf district.

For this reason, the Catholic Church planned to build a new community center near the new building area. After the property at Brauhausstrasse 10 was acquired in 1980, the rectory was built in 1981/1982 and the new St. Mary's Church with adjoining parish center, which was consecrated on May 13, 1984, in the immediate vicinity.

The former parish church on Alfred-Reinhardt-Straße, which was renamed with the consecration of the new building in St. Hedwig and in which services were celebrated until 2005, was acquired by the Armenian community in 2006 and renamed the Armenian Resurrection Church “Surp Harutyun “Been consecrated.

Structure and equipment

Detail on the main building

The modern, lightly plastered church building on an octagonal floor plan is characterized by a clear, functional design language. A wreath of stained-glass windows runs under the copper-clad flat roof. In the interior, the white balustrade of the north and west gallery contrasts with the red color of the brick-clad walls.

The Madonna figure from the 2nd half of the 15th century was taken over from the old church in Alfred-Reinhardt-Straße.

The crucifixion painting from the mid-18th century is the work of Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich . The 14 Stations of the Cross are copies of works by the Mainz artist Evamaria Brückner von Eiff from 1971.

The Nienburg sculptor Werner Nickel , who accompanied the construction and furnishing of the church, created the altar, the figure of Christ and the tabernacle .

The church has a mechanical organ with ten stops on two manuals, which comes from the organ building workshop Kühn in Merseburg .
